The Lighting Workshop

This is the video of me taking the photos.

These are the other photos:

The light is the dimmest on this photo.

The lights are not quite as dim as the previous picture, however, it has a rather low lighting and has created a shadow.

The lights are about mid way on this photo and although there is a shadow, it seems a bit brighter.

This photo has the brightest setting and really shows off the colour of the trainers.

The lights have been re arranged and slightly dimmed so it looks as if the light is coming in on an angle.

My favorite picture is the fourth one because it has a really nice shadow, but still makes the color look vibrant.

Self Assessment

Self Assessment -

Why did we use studio light to photograph our trainer (discuss the quality of image)?
We used the studio light to photograph the trainers because it could show different shades of the colours and created shadows and effects you can't get on the internet. It also made the images less pixelated.

How did you use the lighting kit in own your photography for your final poster?

I haven't yet finished my final poster, but that is a next step for Wednesday's lesson.

What do you need to do next week (Computer Design for final poster using Illustrator and Photoshop)?
Set yourself three steps
1. Upload the photos of the trainers onto blogger.
2. Finish off my poster.
3. Upload my final poster to blogger.

New Final Design Mock up

This is now my final design. I re made the design because everything from the setting to the shoes were wrong and weren't helping create the effect and 'message' that I wanted. To add, it is  more likely that I will be able to actually create this advert because I can photograph some shoes that are the same type as these.

Final Design for Trainer

For my trainer advert, I am going to have a person jumping into the shoes. I am also having the trainers a bright blue a with a neon pink to contrast against the gloomy, dull background of a rainy park. This will show off the trainers and because it will look as if someone is jumping into them, give the image that they are exciting and will make you happy, even if it is raining.

This is my trainer mind map

Apposed to having the original colour scheme I chose (yellow, green and purple), I changed it to blue and pink because I couldn't find a trainer made by Sketchers that had that variety of color. I will add the Sketchers logo as well.

To add, my target audience has changed due to the change of colour scheme. instead of it being teens in general, it is now aimed at female teenagers.

This is what I changed about the original design.

Analysis of trainer adverts

Analysis of trainer adverts.

The function of an advert is to advertise a product that someone has produced, in this case, it is trainers. They use previous sales and information to create a target audience. The target audience for this would probably be a healthy person who likes running and takes good care in themselves. Another target audience for these trainers could be a woman because they are pink. You could specify both of these possibilities and make an assumption that these trainers are aimed at a woman who either has been advised to get healthier or enjoys running anyway.

I'd say that they have used photoshop to make the trainers and the water bottles to look more 'heart like'. They could have done this by adding the photo of a heart into photoshop and putting the trainers and other products on top of it so that it looks more realistic. Also, if it didn't quite fit, they could distort it and make it look more like it is meant to be there.

Personally, I would do something similar to this, but I would add more colour and show more of a different color range so it may appeal to everyone.

This advert is promoting a pair of trainers. The photos look as if the trainers have been splashed with bright colours and the colour scheme that they have chosen could appeal to both boys and girls. This is because the purple and the blue are quite girly colours, but the black and the green colours are quite boyish, so the trainers may appeal to a girl who prefers things like skating and playing football. I don't think that this would appeal to men because the colours are quite childish, however the trainers might appeal to a boy.

I think that they have used a combination of photoshop and images taken on a camera because they could have thrown paint at a wall and added that to photoshop and then got a photo of the trainers and merged them together.

If I were to make an advert like this, I would make it clearer what I was trying to make a statement about because I found it quite difficult to find their 'theme' . I would also use a different colour scheme.

The function of this advert is to emphasize how tough they are. They have achieved this because the shoes are like a shield and are protecting people in the army and everyone knows how difficult the army is, so you think that the trainers will be sturdy and not break after you've worn them a couple of times. This is probably aimed more at men and boys because the army is quite a manly thing to do and not a lot of women sign up. Another reason why this may appeal more to men could e because they have

I think that the people who created this image probably got an image of people being protected by a wall and they have added a few photos that they've taken of their shoes. They have probably duplicated this and created a wall.

If I were to make this advert, I would probably add a female solider as well as a male because it may appeal more to women apposed to what it may do now.

Comparison of Photoshop and Illustrator

Photoshop

Things I prefer:
  • You can see the pixels and edit them in more detail
  • Has a better menu layout
  • Has a more professional looking layering system

Things I am not too keen on:

  • Some of the tools aren't as easy to access as they are on Illustrator

Illustrator

Things I prefer:

  • The layout of the tools are clear
  • You can have a larger variety of colour

Things I am not too keen on:

  • It is really simple to do something wrong, but it is a lot more difficult to put it back right.
  • You can't edit things in as much detail

Which is better?

Well, for things, such as logo design, using Illustrator is better because it is like a piece of paper that you can draw on, where as Photoshop would be editing images into other images. Photoshop is formatted with pixels where as Illustrator uses vectors.

Why People Would use Each Program:

People who were editing real life photos would use Photoshop because you can make your photo more refined by editing pixel by pixel. If you were designing a logo, you would use Illustrator because it is more like paper and what you see, you get. Also, you can have access to a wider variety of colours. They would use Illustrator to create a logo, perhaps for a magazine, but they would also use Photoshop to edit a photo that would be going onto the front cover.

What I created:

I created a logo timeline on Coca-Cola through Illustrator.I created a photo of a wave breaking and added in a shark, a starfish and a bird through Photoshop.

What I learnt:

I learnt that layers are your best friend on both programs because if you go wrong, you always have them to fall back on.
I learnt that when doing a task through Photoshop, virtually anything is possible, no matter how outside the box it is. I also learnt that when using Illustrator, your possibilities are slightly more limited, but what you can produce is really cool.

What I enjoyed:

I enjoyed editing pixels and making an image that isn't meant to be there, look like it is meant to be there on Photoshop.

I enjoyed being able to make images cartoonish and surreal on Illustrator.

What I found challenging:
I found the technique of manipulating things more challenging on Photoshop because some tools couldn't be used together when I needed them to. I found editing images in more detail on Illustrator more challenging because you can't see tiny details of the picture as easily as you can in Photoshop.

In the Future:

On Photoshop I would like to learn how to change real images into cartoon images and on Illustrator I would like to learn how to revert problems more easily. I feel that in certain aspects of both programs I am confident, however, when it comes to future tasks, I may need help with new techniques.

My Final Design and Self Review

This is my final design that I created on Photoshop.

Self Review:

What is a composite image?
A composite image is an image that has been manipulated or modified with images from online.

How would you describe a surreal image?
I would describe it as an image that isn't real.

What new techniques did you learn on Photoshop today?
I learnt how to pull a layer through to the background by changing the brush's flow and opacity.

How successful was your example piece?
My piece wash;t too successful because I don't think I chose a good theme to do.

What would you do differently next time?
I would change my theme and spend more time making the photo's looking like they were meant to be there by zooming in to the pixels more and making it look more even.

How would it improve your final outcome?
It would make it more interesting and intriguing. It would also look more professional.

Eric Johansson Inspired Work

First, you add your photo into photoshop by dragging it onto the icon. This will then make this photo your background.

You do the same with the photos that you want to add to photoshop, but it will make t a layer, not a background. Use CMD+SHIFT and drag it onto your background so you can edit it.

This is now your first layer. you need to add this blank cover over it by clicking the icon that has a circle in the centre of it. When you click CMD+I, the photo will disappear.

This is your brush opacity and flow. You need to lower both of them to bring the photo through, whilst the cover is on the photo.

You will soon notice that the photo shows through and you can do this with any photo.

To add more images, you just need to repeat the process.

My final design

This is my final design that I created on Illustrator.

How I made my timeline on illustrator

First, I downloaded a Coca Cola font and typed the title.

Then, I added in my Coca Cola bottle and 'cartooned' the image for a better effect on the poster.
After that, I drew out the drop and coloured it a similar brown to Coca Cola.
I repeated this several times to give the effect that Coke was spilling out of the bottle.

Not long after doing this, I added the logos.
I then added the dates that went along with the logos.

After that, I added some information and opinions to the logos.

And finally, I added my review.

Peer Assessment - 07.10.2013

Peer Assessment (Assessing Chloe)

I think that Chloe has used the arc tool and the shape tool really creatively to create the effect of bubbles. I also think that the background is really well chosen and contrasts with the design she has chosen.

I think that Chloe has used illustrator in quite high quality because she has managed to use all of the basic tools to  a high standard. E.g: The font colour has changed as well as the style, the can has been well edited and is a smooth shape.

If I were to offer Chloe advice, I would say to make the text fit into the can more by making it smaller or having less text. I would also advise her to keep to the same font so it looks like it is all meant to be together a little bit more.
